About

The first modern
Japanese Restaurant
Brought to you by BRG

Much like the Japanese delicacy it is named for, Momotaro takes root in the vibrant Fulton Market District. Momotaro continues the philosophy of chef driven concepts focusing on tightly executed cuisine and highly personal service. Designed by world-renowned restaurant and experience designers, AvroKO, the main floor features distinct stations for Sushi and a dedicated Robata. Famed Washington DC Chef Mark Hellyar leads the Robata and Contemporary sections of the kitchen with Kaze Chan guiding the sushi station.

The Izakaya

Momotaro's Lower
Level Japanese Bar

The Izakaya is located on the subterranean level of Momotaro. The Izakaya and its shared plates menu echoes the Yokocho street scene of Tokyo. Narrow lounge-inspired 'alleys' around a central bar bedecked with hand-painted Japanese menus, moody neon lights, and vintage Tokyo street signs set the scene for the Izakaya's direct nod to Tokyo's most famous post-war black markets. Dark, energetic, and ripe with expectation, the Izakaya additionally offers a 30-seat bar featuring crafted cocktails, sakes, and a quality selection of Japanese whiskeys.

Executive Chef
Jason Beliveau

Jason Beliveau attended the Culinary Institute of America in New York City and shortly after he began his career in some of the best kitchens around the nation. Beliveau has worked for James Beard Award-winning chefs and bakers, including Jim Lahey, Marco Canora, Daniel Boloud, Dan Barber, Thomas Keller, Dave Beran and Grant Achatz.

Beliveau joined the team eager to learn more about Japanese cuisine and eventually engulfed himself in mastering izakaya cooking. From Momotaro’s design to the signage to the plate and glassware, Beliveau believes that the restaurant’s ambiance and food work together to provide diners with a true izakaya experience–one that is hard to find outside Japan.

Chef Mark Hellyar
Executive Chef / Partner

Momotaro’s Executive Chef and Partner, Mark Hellyar, started his professional culinary career working with Michel Richard at his iconic Citronelle, and then continued his education at Nora’s, both in Washington D.C. Nora’s, America’s first certified organic restaurant, became home to Chef Hellyar for four years, and saw him rise to Chef de Cuisine.

Chef Hellyar’s ultimate goal since his time in Japan was to have the opportunity to conceptualize and develop a Japanese restaurant that showcases the food of the modern Japanese culture. This happened to coincide with the plans of Kevin Boehm and Rob Katz of Boka Restaurant Group, and a partnership was formed. The cooking at Momotaro accents the seasons, features Japanese and locally sourced proteins and vegetables, and a unique and exceptional sushi program. Momotaro was designed by the well renowned AvroKO, and features a lower level lounge, and a dramatic private party room. Chef Hellyar, after many years of nomadic travel, is happy to be settled in the West Loop neighborhood of Chicago.
